Since moving into our new home the girls and I have made it a nightly routine to pull weeds and water the plants. While working in our little flowerbed our oldest daughter Melody asked me a simple question that lead to a startling revelation, “Why do we pull out the weeds?”.
Now listen, I’m no gardening expert. Far from it but I did my best to explain to my four year old how the weeds steal the water from the flowers and she immediately shouted “We gotta get those weeds out Mama but how can you tell which ones are bad when they all look so much alike?!”.
Well, ain’t that the truth?! I was stunned. In that moment I realized that the only difference between the life sucking weeds and the blooming flowers was a matter of perspective. To my sweet little girl all the plants looked lovely but to someone who has the knowledge to differentiate between a weed and a flower it’s obvious what needs to be plucked out.
How often do we allow bitterness to take root in our hearts? How long do we allow guilt, shame and comparison to drain us of our joy? Do we even realize that these things have taken up residence in our lives?! It’s time to learn the difference between what is life giving and what is sucking the life right out of you! It can be something subtly hidden yet given the opportunity, like a weed it could slowly destroy you. Sometimes we have to look closely, dig deep and do the dirty work. Are you picking up what I’m putting down here? It’s time to uproot the lies and plant the seed of truth within our hearts friends! You don’t have to do it alone. Find someone to pray with you or better yet, ask God to help you remove that which is hindering you! He sees you. He hears you. He cares for YOU.
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. Hebrews 12:15
